"Picasso at the Lapin Agile" takes a glance at the twentieth century. The story discusses the importance of science and art to society. Martin discusses the difference between talent and genius. Picasso is a character who is great because of his talent for painting. He was born with this talent and his masterpeices just came to him. Einstein is revered for his mind and the way he thinks. His acheivements were the result of an amazing mind and thousands of hours of hard work. Martin shows that the talents of these two men were very different but had their similarities. Both of these men were visionaries. They took their individual fields to places that had never been dreamed of by their peers. After the characters establish the similarities, a new character brings an interesting new perspective to the conversation. Martin uses this mysterious stranger to show that pop culture always gets more attention than the sciences and arts. Even though Einstein and Picasso were geniuses in their own rights a simple southern boy gets more fame than either of them. This shows that society doesn't focus on the revolutionaries of their time but instead focuses on the people who provide simple entertainment.
